Universal and Illumination's 'Despicable Me 3' is successfully fighting off any sequel fatigue.

Gru and his trouble-making minions are setting off early July Fourth fireworks at the North American box office, where Despicable Me 3 is on course to earn $30 million on Friday for a three-day debut in the $85 million range before racking up more big numbers on Monday and Tuesday, the official holiday, according to early matinee returns.
Universal and Illumination Entertainment's threequel is one of the few 2017 summer event films fending off sequel fatigue. Friday's haul will include $4.1 million in Thursday evening previews.
In 2013, Despicable Me 2 also opened over the Fourth of July holiday frame, opening on a Tuesday to $4.7 million in previews. For the three-day period, Despicable Me 2 earned $83.5 million, and it earned $143.1 million in its first five days over the holiday. In 2015, spinoff Minions earned $6.2 million in previews on its way to a huge opening of $115.7 million.
The third installment follows Gru (Steve Carell) as he meets up with his long-lost twin brother, Dru (also voiced by Carell). Together, they take on a diamond thief (Trey Parker).
